Standard 3Being able to model digital-age work and learning can be tricky if you are unsure of what free digital tools are out there for you or even if you don’t know how to use them. I was once there, but over a period of time with the help of an education in technology course, I was able to discover a variety of ways that I could model digital-age work and learning. After the course I took I am able to demonstrate fluency in technology systems, collaborate with students, peers, parents and community members using digital tools and resources, communicate relevant information and ideas effectively to students, parents and peers, and model/facilitate effective use of current and emerging digital tools to locate, analyze, evaluate and use information resources.
Creating an instructional video (Item 5) is a great way to demonstrate fluency in technology systems. Never having to create a video before, this assignment was one of the hardest yet simplest things to do. This was a group project when it came to creating and filming it, but the editing it was all done individually. I used iMovie to create my video and it allowed me to incorporate some of the digital tools I learned about previously. Some of the digital tools that I used were, Powtoons, Youtube, and Google Images. Powtoons allowed our group to create a powerpoint like background to give the audience visuals of the text as the background. Youtube was used to upload the video and to add captions, while google images was used to search for images to add to the background. In order to collaborate with students, peers, parents and community members using digital tools and resources, I found that creating a discussion forum or a blog from Wordpress (Item 2) would be one of the better ways. Creating a blog is a great tool to keep the community involved in what is going on in the classroom. When it comes to events, activities, fundraisers etc. a class blog is excellent. The catch is, that it is only effective for people with computers or access to the internet to view the blog. I have used a blog on Wordpress before and believe it is a great tool because anyone can comment on a post with a question or anything they need help with and the blogger can answer it. Blogs are not time consuming and even if you don’t like to write novels you can put the basics on it. Using Wordpress, is not only great to collaborate with students, peers and the community, it is also a great way to communicate relevant information and ideas effectively. Anyone can view your blog and see what is going on that day or in the next couple of days. Parents and or students can access it if they missed a class to see what they missed and if there is any way to make it up. Model and facilitate effective use of current and emerging digital tools to locate, analyze, evaluate and use information resources to support research and learning can be done through a variety of ways. One way in particular would be through reflective learning and being able to create am e-portfolio (Item6) to demonstrate what you’ve learned. This website for instance, is a great example of an e-portfolio. I am able to demonstrate what I have learned and write about it. This way the teacher is able to view my work and see where my strengths and weaknesses instead of taking a test. |

Items 5 & 6
Item 5: The video above on the left, is the instructional video I made about volcanoes. It was tricky at first and took a lot of time to edit, but after awhile I picked it up pretty quickly.
Item 6: The e-portfolio I created is this website you are on now. I created it to demonstrate what I have learned about the ISTE standards and to show some of the digital tools I have used while learning them.
